This volume of the annual review opens with a methodology article 'Improved designs for cluster randomised trials' by C. M. Crespi. Over time, health research has developed a pyramid of the strength of evidence for medical and therapeutic interventions. Randomized controlled trials occupy a place on the top of the pyramid. In individually randomized trials, the participant is randomly allocated to the treatment options.- Annual Review of Physiology, 2017

The personal reflections of a scientist, which has been part of so many earlier Annual Reviews of Physiology, is missing in this particular volume. I found that disappointing – there is something about being taken along a life’s journey, sharing the pain, tribulations and ultimate triumph that has marked the lives of so many great scientists. Personal reflections allow scientists to share the uncertainties that they have faced and the measures they took to overcome them. These are lessons which are increasingly difficult to understand from published scientific papers, given the constraints of space and editorial oversight.- Annual Review of Public Health

When I scanned the contents of this edition of the Annual Review of Public Health, my attention was immediately drawn to the article by Peter Craig et al. entitled ‘Natural experiments: an overview of methods, approaches, and contributions to public health intervention research’.- Annual Review of Physiology, 2018. This book reflects extensive scholarly activity by the author Sunil Pandya, on medical education in western India in general, and more specifically the early history of his alma mater, Grant Medical College (GMC) and Sir Jamsetjee Jejeebhoy Hospital (JJ Hospital), Mumbai. This book review is in two parts. The first part will inform the reader how the book is structured and what broad information they can expect to find in it. The second part deals with my own interpretation of the book, its value and messages for our times.- Annual Review of Physiology, 2019

This volume of Annual Review of Physiology starts with two articles on the fate and function of mitochondria. The first article on the ‘Evolving concepts of mitochondrial dynamics’ focuses on the issues of mitochondrial fusion, mitochondrial fission, trafficking pathways and mitophagy. The article brings into focus mitochondrial dynamics in the heart which is the most energy-dependent and mitochondrial-rich mammalian organ (accounting for a third of the weight of cardiomyocytes).- Annual Review of Physiology, 2020
